New rules on travel of domestic carnivores in Europe

aviator Tursita dog fun funny paper airplane guideStarting from 4 July 2011, the tattoo will be most recognized by our European neighbours. The chip then becomes the only means of identification authorized to cross European borders in case of identified animals after the 4 July 2011.

Any trip border of a dog, a cat or a ferret identified after this date will therefore require a minimum:

– The pet passport
– A rabies vaccination valid
– An identification microchip

For the Animals identified before the 4 July 2011, the tattoo will remain a method ofrecognized identification when traveling in the EU (except for countries that already accepted that electronic identification, namely, the Ireland, Malta and the United Kingdom)

These new provisions are governed by European law text. A different interpretation of that text by a member state of the European Union remains possible.

It is therefore strongly advised, before moving to a neighboring country, the embassy of the latter and the company that will ensure your transportation to their requirements in identifying domestic carnivores (acceptance of tattooing and electronic identification or only the electronic chip) and avoid any concern at border crossings.

The new regulation applies only to travel.

The tattoo remains – for the time being – valid, French territory, for certification of rabies vaccination.
